It is now over 11 years since the Italian Group began in 2014, and we have come a long way.  At the start we called ourselves ‘The Beginners’ Italian Group’. as we learned the skills for listening, speaking, reading, writing and then grammar.  The construction of the language is very different to English e.g. there are seven different ways of saying ‘the’.  As time went by the group got bigger and our abilities increased, so we changed our name to the plain  ‘Italian Group’.  We meet up every fortnight on a Tuesday from 11.00am to 12.30pm and  have our own room in Poulton Library.  The format of each meeting has changed over the years and currently we go over the homework which consists of grammar exercises and reading and translating out loud several articles that have an Italian interest.  Following this we split up into smaller groups of 3-4 members and practise conversation in Italian.  This can be anything a member wants to talk about e.g. an event at home, their family, a holiday, food, another hobby, any aspect of Italy as a country.   The subject for discussion can be prepared beforehand or not.  The range of members’ abilities is from A2 to B1 i.e. elementary to intermediate.  We are at full capacity at the moment but there is a waiting list if anyone is interested in joining the group.   However, a  person would have to have some knowledge (basic is fine) of Italian.
