Group Leader - Geoffrey Cowell
The idea of the u3a is for members to learn from each other. This could have been difficult with a group like ours since most members have only done science at school and as such may think they have had little to offer to the group. However, with a little encouragement some have been asked persuaded to give presentations on their favourite scientists or a subject of particular interest e.g. drones, robotics, our solar system, and the role of trees in our society.
We are fortunate that we have some members with a background in science or medicine or technology. They have made presentations covering their area of expertise - marine science, banking computers, food manufacture, retail technology, science of learning, racing cars and many others.
We have also dealt with some very topical issues (e.g. vaccines, joint replacements, osteoporosis and river sewage pollution). Presentations by outside speakers have covered atomic research and vitamins. So, we cover a wide variety of subjects and are open to new ideas to broaden our knowledge!
